I feel like a complete idiot...

Just bought a pair of 22mm full bore lever valves to fit under the bath for isolating the supplies. I can't turn them to the off position! It looks like there is a section of pipe inside about 2.5cm long, not a ball shaped thing I was expecting. Do I need to force this the first time I turn it off?

They are meant to be like that, they can be very stiff the first time :)
