Im a bit of a novice and looking for advice on fitting a new Stopcock for my mains water supply. Any help would be much appreciated.
    - What tools do I need?
    - How do I select the correct replacement part?
    - Any plumbers reading this, what would you charge for the job to give me a rough idea the cost of a proffesional doing it. (the wifes scared I flood the place !)

    Cheers

    Swap a stopcock?

£40 supply and fit it's a five minute job if access is OK and the streetcock turns off.

Copper pipe, MDPE, galv pipe, etc. I reckon that you should get a plumber in.

As Captain mentioned easy enough, pending that you have play in the pipe, and the new stopcock has the same threads as the old nuts.
Why are you looking to change ?

And when you can't turn it off, how much for a freeze

Get a plumber in - you wouldn't want it to fly off in the middle of the night due to the olive being a bit slack

    £65 + a feq quid for parts.

Dependant on access, pipe material, street stopcock £50+Tap roughly

  8. I'd personally go for a full-bore lever ball valve to make it all easier to use - a quarter-turn from offski to onski. And far less likely to seize or fail.

    Eg: http://www.screwfix.com/p/pegler-ball-valve-blue-22mm/18343

If it'll cope with steam and oil, it should handle water ok...

Maxdawg, if you post a photo on here of your existing tap, and if you have access to the stopcock in the street to shut off the water to your house, then we can possibly guide you towards DIYing this if you want.

But for around £40 - £50 labour, you might chust want to let a pro do it to be sure to be sure.
