Why can non -compliant, i.e. plastic, CUs be sold if they can't be legally installed?

They can be installed in commercial properties, in out buildings or inside an enclosure constructed from non combustible material.

Thanks Lectrician. Don't think my garage although brick but under a bedroom would be classed as an outbuilding. Will have a metal CU installed to be sure.

Or by those who don't give a toss :).

I am sure with our hosts currently dumping plastic CUs at £40 a few will find there way into properties.

I just bought one to build a test rig.

And you can buy a gas boiler from B&Q etc. They wont ask you if you are Gas-Safe registered.

They are only non-compliant in certain situations.

Because they can still be used too.

you can recess the CU into the wall. Then place a metal doored panel over it and so on. Depends on how you install the CU. In the UK it is very rare to see a CU recessed into the wall like sockets and switches are but it can be done.

Its been mentioned about plastic consumer units being used still - I've some mates in the events industry who build custom power distribution boxes, and they still use the non-amendment 3 CU. Also things like vans - you don't need a metal CU for hook up applications, but you do need the CU

Why not, after all a good job is work of art so why not show it off and Glass will not exactly contribute to the fire, might melt and distort but not combust.
After all it is stated that it must not be made of a combustible material.
I mean no one said it could not be glowing cherry red hot, aslong as it is not bursting into flames :D

A good job won't catch fire in the first place lol.
