Hi all can anyone help? Baxi 552back boiler with primatic cylinder pumped return, central heating was playing up,noisy constantly needed bleeding, had new pump fitted British gas homecare,he then stayed 6hrs trying to get CH to work to no avail, said he would return to sort following day with another engineer, neither could sort,so was quoted for new system, not too happy just washed their hands of it First rad (downstairs)gets hot then pipe goes upstairs in the wall!,with system off bled all rads water from all, when heating is switched on no rads upstairs except bathroom, looked for antigravity valve but don't seem to be one can anyone help?
when was the pump fitted ? Have you got hot water in your taps via the baxi boiler ? edit, what was the source of the noise ?
Things to investigate include, the pump must be running, the pump body not blocked, some type of anti gravity valve could be installed it could be seized(valve is often hidden away),There could be a gate valve on the heating circuit pipework which is not fully open, boiler tappings for radiator flow/return could be partially blocked with corrosion/sludge,could be a 1 pipe heating circuit so all radiator valves need to be fully open, the heating circuit could be partially blocked ,check for a bypass radiator or circuit, pump is pumping in the correct direction and set on a low speed. As you know your system is ancient and not treated with inhibitor but it could be got working, you need an older experienced repair person not guy's who prod flues for a living. Good luck,
thanks teach, the noise is like a wave going thru the pipes surging almost, ive drained system down twice yesterday and slowly refilled getting a fair bit of sludge out, switching the heating on getting the surge first rad downstairs is teed straight off boiler down pipe, and gets hot then the pipe goes upstairs plastered in the wall I can feel the heat thru the wall all the way up ,I did get some heat to another radiator last night but this morning apart from the first one all are cold but full of water,as a last result this morning ive been running system, then draining down a few of the rads down stairs, ive been getting cold water out and then eventually hot after 10 mins ,It almost seems to me the pump doesn't seem to be man enough, ive tried a few heating engineers but as you said most haven't seen this type of system
any ideas on how to get it out? ive tried draining down is it worth dropping rads and somehow flushing pipes?
So, out of touch with primatic systems, I'll leave it to Teach to sort, but turning off tvr & lockshiels & removing radiators & flushing through out side might help, but with primatic cylinders you can loose your bubbles & then get the dirty radiator water coming out of the taps, you can't use a cleaner or inhibitor, due to the risk of water contaminating the tap water, a nightmare.
yes ive had the system apart a Cpl of yrs ago to fit 2 new rads, and took ages getting the bubble back, already started the removal of the rads so sh#t or bust!
Hopefully BG Hcare would have eliminated any water pipe blockages in the gas boiler connections, they are the qualified experts.they would have removed the gas fire to do that and have a good look in that catchment area for an anti gravity valve or anything usual. primatic cylinders need experience repair people, the heating circulation fault is easily fixed but it needs inspection and a check list created like #6 to work through. Good luck,
A lot of peeps today have no experience primatic cylinders & how the system works,& have never worked on them.
Have you tried bleeding the rads through both the flow and return? Move through the system in sequence, close return and bleed, when good bleed achieved, close flow, open return and bleed again. Repeat on other rads. Often there can be an airlock which does not show when bleeding because there is always an open path.
had every radiator in the house off today, flushed and refitted, blew thru pipes and all seemed clearslowly refilled system and bled up all rads getting all air out,all rads full of water set pump on low speed, and started ch,still the same,1st rad boiling none of the others warming up!!!!!!!! beginning to think the plasters got to come off to see if there is a non return valve in the wall 2days and counting
Hunt the gravity valve, the fun your going to have, years ago had a siezed valve, the pipes were located in a recess, but someone had bricked up the recess, so valve was impossible to get to, unless you demolished the wall. The owner decided to replace the whole system rather than knock down the wall.
There will def be one? The only place I can see it to be is in the wall on a 15mm pipe I've tried everywhere else
