is there a hard and fast rule on bath fitting heights? or is it more what ever looks best cosmetically?

Minimum height is determined by how much adjustment there is in the legs of the bath support and the size of any bath panel that you wish to fit. Maximum height can be whatever you like, but bear in mind, the higher the bath, the harder it is to get in and out.

usually when you buy a bath it comes with a panel, this will determine the hight, 21" to the bath top is a norm , you may have to go higher if the trap is on a concrete floor
