Am about to embark on a new bathroom project, 3 walls of the room are lath and plaster which is in pretty poor condition, 2 of which are going to be tiled for a walk in shower, what should i put up to replace the lath and plaster which will be a suitable substrate for tiling on?
I would remove lath & plaster & replace with a cement back backer board,(tile backer board) ideally 12mm, many makes available,it totally imperivous to water. I'm not a tiler, so I will leave it to others on here, who can recommend other suitable makes of board. http://www.jameshardie.co.uk/hardiebacker-12mm-cement-board http://www.marmox.co.uk/products/multiboard
For the non shower wall I would use a moisture resistant plasterboard, again 12.5mm,Knauf ,Gyproc do a range of suitable boards.
I re did a bathroom ceiling done in lath and plaster. Shut the door and window, and climbed in to the loft through small hatch and broke from above. The most dusty job I've ever done.
I used 12mm exterior grade ply for walls to be tiled and regular plasterboard for walls not to be tiled. You can tile straight to the plywood. Ensure that the plywood is well screwed
Scamp, use the stuff that's designed for the job - waterproof tiling board as outlined by KIAB above.
Here is a good guide document and it details all suitable substrates: plywood, cement backer board etc https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&s...T-N0XHM3g-99ER3kg&sig2=rwqzk8yRTZGynTq7TBpanw Hopefully the link works, if not Google FIRED EARTH WALL TILING GUIDE
