I am going to construct a replacement loft hatch and access panel. I would like the panel to drop down when you open it with a pole, and to close shut when you push it up with the pole. However I am unsure what type of latch and hinge would be best (and secure) enough for this so the panel does not accidentally fall open. Could anyone give some advice. Thanks Graham
hi diy, if you buy those aluminium ladders for loft hatches from the big name sheds then you get all the hinges and latches with it. also make your panel out of blockboard. this is laminated strips with an outer veneer. 2 sides have the end grain and 2 have the running grain. cut the board so you screw hinges into running grain so you get a good fix.

jools look at all my posts. i do actually help people alot of the time. if you want to come on here and stick around i suggest you do the same as i dont think you have offered any advice yet have you. just a bit of advice, its up to you if you take it or not. but we see idiot mummies boys like you all the time around here and thats ok, but please say something useful everynow and again please or else you do become reallllly boring. even more than me.
That reminds me, I must pack that bottom hinge out thanks jim. now i cant forget about looseing the middle can i?
personally i prefer to nail doors into the linings, it avoids packing out any hinges. better still you dont need hinges at all. but its a bug**r to use the doors

Not very good at taking defeat on the chin SID. Are you ? Handyandy - really do i get a brownie point?
It's not really about scoring brownie points. More expecting people to put up or shut up. Not a lot on here admit when they are wrong. And that's sad. Because we all like to learn. If they don't admit they're wrong, it appears that they have not learned anything. I feel sorry for them. But not so sorry that I will shed a tear, they just leave themselves open to more p**s taking. Handyandy - really [Edited by: Forum Moderator]
