Using my circular saw today and it started to make a rattle noise from near where the blade attaches and after unplugging and having a look the blade can move side to side a few mm even though its tight.
Any idea what could cause this and do I need a new saw?

Is the fixing, a nut or a bolt ?

If a bolt, check that nothing has fallen into the bolt hole, so preventing the bolt tightening down.

If a nut and washer, check the washer is over the spindle properly.

had another look its a Allen bolt through the blade but the movement seems to be the shaft as well rather than the blade on the bolt. I was cutting quite thick oak at the time so was quite hard work but i wasn't forcing it through hard.

It sounds like the bearings have gone.

Yeah. Chuck it & buy another one. Not worth repairing. :(

Don't give up yet. Some bearings are just housed between the two plastic casing sides which are bolted together obviously to encase everything, and loose bolts may allow the whole bearing assembly to move. Check the casing bolts, especially those around the shaft, making sure hey have not worked loose. Otherwise, back to plan B :(
