Hello Luckily for me its been ages since I've needed to ask for advice from you guys. I have a conifer (Elwoodii) in our lawn that has grown too large; it is currently about 7m high and 2 m in diameter. I want it and ideally the stump too gone. A couple of guys can cut it down for me at reasonable cost, but that leaves (no pun intended) a large amount of branches etc to dispose of. Way too much for the local council tip to accept. Can anyone suggest some solutions please? Many thanks, Steve
Try your local Freecycle, Freegle, someone might want the logs for the fire, by November they should have dried out enough to burn.
Some could and would be offerred to neighbours, but the bulk of the tree wouldn't constitute 'logs' but masses of smaller branches.
Local recying centre then, cut into smaller pieces & dump over several weeks, or have a bonfire bottom of garden. Even hiring a petrol shredder, you still going to have a large pile of chips to dispose of.
The 'guys' don't sound like proper tree contractors to me or they would be able to chip/shred the brash and dispose of all the arisings for you through proper means and on a waste carriers licence. I would seek a couple more quotes for this. The stump might not be too hard to dig out depending on location/surroundings but if you choose to do this leave a decent amount of trunk unfelled (600-900mm) so that you've got something to get hold of and lever, push or pull as required. That can be cut off afterwards once it's out. If you're having the stump ground out though, get the tree cut as close to the ground as possible. Good luck with it.
No they are not tree contractors. Its a guy who has done all sorts of work for me in the past - he is hard working, honest, not expensive... and his new young oppo.
Last summer I asked a guy felling a large tree in a neighbours - their charge was £300 to take the branches to the front of the house to chip as the chipper would not get past beside the house.
Sounds reasonable. I was given a day rate for 2 guys and a chipper of nearly twice that, and a large tree with removal of everything could easily be half a days work for 2 people.
Absolutely not knocking your guy - many of us would be very proud of the description you gave him and to have built up that rapport with a client. It's just that there are specialists in certain fields and their training (the number of different certificates for different chainsaw tasks for instance is vast), equipment, licences and insurance all come at a cost. Is there a compromise available where your guy can provide the 'grunt' labour? Unlikely but not impossible - you need a ticket to operate a chipper.
Take it to the local tip, I bought a small 7x4 Paxton caged trailer for my garden tearout/makeover and so far have taken (after felling and logging) a 40 foot willow tree, 8 x 4m conifers and about 5m of hedge including all stumps (not the Willow obviously) and they've not batted an eyelid, just approached them the first time I went, explained that I'm doing the whole garden over the next few months and that I'd be there with the trailer quite a lot with all sorts but I'd be sure to tidy up any mess before I leave each trip. Trailer's probably paid for itself 4 times over in skip savings already.
You'd be surprised how much volume this tree will take up. I had a large conifer removed and even when chipped it took up most of the lorry.
A conifer that size would fill a 6 yard skip no problems, so it's not really fisible to take it to the local waste tip a bit at a time in your car, you'll have to bite the bullet and hire a skip.
Do you not need a licence to go to the skips with your trailer, we do at ours, its free but limits you to one trip a month.
No limit been mentioned here, I just call the council and let them know I'm going on that day and the car/trailer reg, they then let the guys at the tip know to expect you.
Thanks very much guys for all your suggestions. The guy I referred to who could cut it down have a large box van. I think the tree would fill this more than once, assuming he would be agreeable. I think I'll try to talk to local tip this weekend and see what their attitude is, I'll be going in without much, if any, stuff and I can ask them. I've only ever take small amount of stuff and have heard that others with vans get turned away. They may be much more agreeable to take a lot of garden waste if they are pre-prepared for a visit. I've often found that if you ask people in advance that their are much more agreeable, rather than present them with a fait accompli.
Ours is only trailers and vans, cars can go as often as they like, its to stop traders taking the pi $$.
I'm perhaps not getting much grief as they can probably see I'm not a trader, it's just a wee trailer but amazing what you can get in it to be fair. Before: During: As it stands now: The trailer:
