    Hi everyone,

I recently posted on a different forum about sliding barn doors to use an internal door to optimise space for my wheelchair as they seem to only be in the USA. I got some really good advice and got a tracking system.

But I am now at my wits end in searching for a door. I have been trying to look for a person that can make internal custom wooden doors as I need larger door for my wheelchair not standard size. This is the type of door I would like to replicate in the image provided.

I have been to several companies that specialise in doors and they can only provide standard size.

I do not know if it is my search terminology that is causing me not to find a person that can make doors. On google I would search for 'door maker' 'timber doors'.

Should I perhaps find a carpenter or a timber merchant?

One 'custom door maker' said he could provide the rustic hardwood I need but not actually make the door this would be up to me.

Therefore do you think it will be better to find a timber merchant that provide rustic hardwood /hardwood flooring and make a door myself?

    Kindest,

    JJ

A simple ledge & brace door, any joinery shop, even carpenter could make you a rustic custom size.
Where are you, someone might know of someone in your area.

  3. JJ, as KIAB says, every single chippie/joiner in your area will be able to make a door like that with no effort whatsoever. And it shouldn't cost much.

Nice door. By the way, I'm pretty sure that example is softwood :).

So, the next issue would be to get it looking the way you want. Again, I'd be surprised if the joiner you choose didn't know someone like a decorator or even a floor sanding fellow - the peeps wot sand your floors and then give them the finish you want.

(Where did you find that photo? Could you contact that website and find out what treatment they gave the door. It's well nice...)

Dead easy to make, where are you?

  5. Could you colour-match it too, Chips?

I know a lot of scenic artists who could.

Do you reckon its soft wood that's been given to blow torch touch and then waxed.

It's all softwood and come from different mills as some went through a bandsaw and some a circular saw.

  9. Blimey.

How many teeth on the blades?

  10. Wouldn't a scenic artist try to replicate the finish using paint 'effects', tho'?

Whereas to get that lovely finish should really be done as naturally as possible - stains and waxes and stuff?

Quite a bit of variation in the wood tones, too, but - man - it looks well nice.

It is a rather nice door, great finish.:)

  12. Chips would make his out of papier mâché and get his scenic artists to make it look like wood... :p

The only thing difficult about making that door is it's size and weight, as Chippie said band saw and circular saw cut, finished is probably a dark wax after sanding all over with an orbital sander to get a reasonable clean surface but retaining a rustic charm. Have done similar finishes some years ago for beams on walls and ceilings.

    Where you located?

We usually make stuff out of steel then clad it in wood and then paint it to look like steel or wood.
The door looks like it was stained with creosote.

Still think it was done like this.

Hi all, many thanks for your replies I actually found the image on google by using the phrase 'rustic sliding barn doors'. As I said this is American and it seems to be really common in the US.

I did have a quote from one company in the US and it was about 1500£. www.rusticahardware.com

I have just searched google for a local chippie but I only got fish and chip recommendations lol

I am actually from Buckinghamshire but do not mind venturing wider if someone can do the exact image. I do not know if this forum has a private messaging service but you can all PM me if you think you could help. My budget is max 200£.

Just left click on the user name left side, you will then see 'start a convesation', click it to send message to that user.

  18. Hi JJ.

Will you require everything done for that money - door made, finished, runner fitted - all installed?

I'm not a chippie, but I suspect that might be pushing it.

The actual door itself is honestly the least of it - getting hold of rough-sawn 6x1 (or similar) timbers and attaching them to two horizontals and diagonal brace is peasy.

Then comes the tricky bits. Locating a suitable suspended roller system, cutting it to length, mounting it securely to the wall above the doorway (I presume the doorway is already there?), finishing off the door opening frame, finding and applying a suitable finish to the timber (that itself could take hours...)...

£200 is a days wages which is probably how long it will take to make, 20M of 6"x1" at say £3.00 pm is £60 then there is the hardware and a days fitting and a days work on on the finish.
I would quote at least £1000 of the top of my head.
