I have got to replace some badly damaged floorboards in a house built 20 years ago. I can only find 18mm thick boards in the local builders merchants, but the boards I need to replace are 20 mm thick.

Are 20mm boards still available? Can't seem to find them anywhere.

18mm is bxq or wicks sizes

any timber yard or builders yard should do 20mm [except the one you tried ]

if you knock off approx 5mm from the sawn size you get the planed size
so if you ask for 6x1" boards they come out at about20mm x 145mm or as floorboards around 139 coverage because of the txg if fitted

so just ask for 6x1 flooring or whatever size with or without groove ;)

except in wicks bxq ect where its around 18mm

I doubt you'll find 20mm..18mm is the standard size now

Obviously I can't check - it's Saturday afternoon, if this is the case what is the correct workaround in this instance?

NO ITS NOT - capitals intentional.

Go to a TIMBER MERCHANT - not B 'n' Screw, Wickez, Travis or Jewson.

As Big All so clearly said, ex 25mm sawn softwood can be finished to 20mm - if you go to a TIMBER MERCHANT rather than a shed they'll machine to what ever size you want or need.

my local merchants are merton timber

you buy floorboards, they are 20mm thick

if you want 18 go elsewhere or thickness them

You could always just rip a 2mm length off some 3x2 and use it as a packer.

In fact sometimes you don't need to go to that bother. I had the same problem last week. It just so happenned there was venetian blind of the wooden variety getting skipped and wouldn't you know the slats were exactly 2mm. Perfect! It's amazing what you can find if you use your imagination and improvize a bit. If I'm stuck for something to do (not very often I'll admit) I'll just grab any scraps of timber and use my portable saw mill (Elu-flip over) and rip up a bucketfull of various sized packings. It's a bit like a chef lobbing all the left overs into the stock pot.
