Am I digging up too much soil? I'm using a shovel for this job is there an easier way to do this? You reckon I can just put some top soil on the old turf and lay new on top? Have about a 10m triangle to dig up.

Spade is better, you can slice it thinner, then just stack the turf in corner of garden & it will rot down.

Would it be really bad if we blend the old turf underneath a layer of topsoil?

Not ideal to lay over existing turf.

Looking at you pic you are approaching it all wrong, first thing is to soak the ground wet through, then mark out strips the width of you spade, using your spade to cut them, you will now be able to slide the spade in about an inch or so down and peel off the turfs in lengths a couple of feet long.

Not even if I dig up old turf, break it down then put a layer of topsoil on top?
