    I guess they were selv lights Carl. I doubt whether enough current would have been drawn at mains voltage without tripping the breaker.

    It was quite a few years ago and I think it was rewirable fuse, no rcd. I think I was still an apprentice then so 20 years plus. I was just making a point that strange things can happen on any circuit. I would check the terminations in the dist board, could be the neutral is loose or snapped also if there is a batton under the worktop holding it up look where the screw is, is it in line with the socket for instance.
