I bought a few of these this morning http://www.screwfix.com/p/victorian-scroll-short-backplate-door-handle-pair-brass-effect/83192 because they are almost identical to the ones I have already but were looking past their best. Unfortunately the handles do not go down enough to open the door, otherwise they are perfect. Do I need new barrels or is there an easy way to adjust the handles to turn just a very slight bit more?
I don't think there is any adjustment on the handle but if you rebated the keep in a bit more that may do it.
It's not the handle that's the problem it's the latch if u pull handle right down how far out dose the latch stick put if it's sticking out a good bit probably best to get a new one other than that check the keeper into tears standard a bit deeper until it will open
I would say the the barrels are worn allowing the square pins to turn a bit before the actual mechanism start working.
Probably find that the handles are a bit restricted on how far they turn. I've filed a mm or 2 from the latch and tapped the keep(inner part) in a bit. Mr. HandyAndy - Really
Many thanks for the replies and help. Being a novice I do not know the terms used for each part. I think what I called the barrel is also called the latch. Is the keep also known as the strike plate in the door frame? I will make the recess slightly bigger and see if that cures it.
Removing the Keeper/Strike plate from the door frames has worked on both doors. Both doors open and close properly without the keeper so all I need to do now is cut enough wood from the frame and replace the plate. Any tips on keeping the new handles looking good because the only reason I replaced the others was they faded badly and did not look good ? Thanks again for your help.
They will fade and the varnish will come off. Just wiping and drying regularly will help. No detergents. Mr. HandyAndy - Really
Oh yeah. And 'latch', the sprung knob that keeps the door shut. I called the striker plate 'keep' because I was trying to describe the actual part that needed to be bent in a tad(the hole that keeps the latch). Mr. HandyAndy - Really
I chiseled out the wood on the two doors and replaced the plate and both doors look 10 times better with the new handles.I know they were cheap but they look good. Thanks for the tip about no detergents. I am going to buy a few more pairs now and finish off the downstairs doors! Thanks again for the help.
