I need to hang new doors. I saw online the guy using what he called a trimmer to rout out the depth for the hinges. I assume this was a router?. What product would be good to buy for this? Can I do a decent job without router but using chisel?

To be perfectly honest, if you've never hung a door before stick to a hammer and chisel, a trimmer is quicker and good for a run of doors but if you've only got a few to do I'd save your money and learn the lost art of hinge recessing, finger slicing and effing and blinding.

If you have chisels and don't already have a router, then practice cutting hinge pockets on some scrap and see if you can make a neat job. It's not difficult if you take your time. If you have lots to do, a lightweight router and a simple jig can rattle them off, but again practice first. Chisels is the traditional way.
