Hi all Have 3 downlights to replace that are fitted into upvc soffit cladding Existing fittings are 240V, fire rated fittings, LED equivalent GU10 lamps fitted. All work fine but fittings are years old and now rusty. Was hoping for a quick like for like swap but looking at the fittings, they can only be IP 20 rated as lamps are exposed Not sure that this is correct as would have thought a higher IP rating would be useful / expected Current cut out is around 56mm and the only fittings I can fit with same cut out requirements are these ones, but again IP 20 http://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-fire-rated-fixed-led-downlight-ip20-gloss-white-2-5w/3701f Can you suggest a couple of suitable options please, 240 V, LED GU10 compatible and what IP rating should I be looking at Fittings are located ground floor, under the roof overhang (bungalow) Many thanks as ever
Collingwood do nice version think H20, they IP rated should be OK for your soffit they pricey but quality down light
I think IP20 is ok in this situation, only "special locations" need the higher spec. as far as I remember, (haven't looked it up so I might be wrong!)
On my last place I used Sylvania Fire Rated Fixed Mains IP65 GU10 downlights with a led lamp in the soffit,a nice fitting, IP65 was excessive, but I got them free. I suppose you could use some IP44 GU10 downlight fittings if really fussy, unlikely soffit area will get wet.
As the soffit is outside then it is IP44 minimum. Look at JCC Hybrid 7. If you are lucky to have JCC cans you can buy an IP65 GU10 LED and bezel that will slot straight in.
Thanks to all above for words of wisdom but, as usual, (no offence meant) conflicting opinions are evident re. IP rating, or indeed if required at all A search through the net throws up the same varied answers and suggests everything from basic cheap pressed fittings with no rating, then IP 20 -67 (and whatever exists in-between) ! This is all based on mains voltage led lamps, GU 10 Difficult for a diyer to make up their minds, coupled with so much choice available and a broad price range. May well get the quality that you pay for but for soffits, am looking at sub £20 per fitting Also notice that a lot of the led downlights now have an integrated, non changeable lamp. Some with a suggested lifespan of 30,000 hrs, working on 7 hrs a night, that's around 11 years expectancy. So is it just the lack of lamp changes needed here that's the major benefit or am I missing something ? Many of the led GU10 are quoting 15-25,000 hrs so hardly a need to be changing lamps frequently Or just buy a halogen GU10 fitting and pop in equivalent GU10 led Ideally looking to buy from our hosts as want to pick them up this w/end. Narrowed down to; http://www.screwfix.com/p/smartware...wnlight-ip65-white-3w/6267h?_requestid=644346 http://www.screwfix.com/p/robus-fix...-downlight-white-240v/68741?_requestid=644792 http://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-fixed...ight-gloss-white-240v/41341?_requestid=645313 I'm now faffing, apologies but just cant decide ! any thoughts on the above, many thanks
Anything installed outside is supposed to be IP44 minimum. I know what others are saying, that its a soffit and therefore sheltered from above, but when it gets howling gales and torrential rain the soffit can easily get wet, so outside is outside.
Thanks again chaps for all the advice, really is appreciated and virtual beers are on the way I've finally made a decision Unfortunately from a competitor ...... Meridian lighting, fire rated, IP 56, mains voltage, just gonna pop an equivalent GU10 led in there Seems to tick all the boxes for me, ok fire rated probably not important in soffit location but at least keeps dust and insects from dropping onto the lens And ......£7.88 a pop (sorry SF....but these are just brilliant value and quality) Have used the I.P. 20 fire rated versions before and to me, build quality is superb. They feel heavy and well constructed, quality springs, decent terminals and big enough for loop in wiring, even using 1.5 T&E So that's it, decided, in stock, job for the weekend..... Now.....what GU10 led should I choose .........................Arghhhhhhhhhhh too much choice ............................. (I blame it all on Europe....don't even go there)
Cool white LED GU10. Using these in downlighters. https://www.ledhut.co.uk/spot-lights/gu10-led-bulbs/5-8-watt-gu10-led-spotlight-60w-replacement.html And these in some adjustable spotlights for lighting the steps in garden, both in cool white. https://www.ledhut.co.uk/spot-lights/gu10-led-bulbs/7-watt-gu10-led-spotlight-70w-replacement.html

Cheers Kiab, will take a look at link, thanks for info, always good to make a saving Still have loads of halogen GU10s around the house and need to decide on switching these over to LED as well Just a minefield on choosing the best LED equivelant as loads of rubbish ones around Thanks again
Touch wood, I have never had a problem with Led Hut GU10 lamps, been using them for several years now, not the most expensive or the cheapest, using their 7w dimmable (70w equivelant ) in kitchen track lighting, lovely bright white light, 5w (50w equivelant) in craft room, & some of their older 4.5w lamps in workshop over bench. Also got a few of their LED B22 12w cool white on landing & hallway.
