When connecting key switches and isolating the perm live only so the rest of the lights stay on, how do know if the batteries are working because surely the switched live would keep them on?
I imagine you are talking about maintained fittings with multiple lamps. Usually only one lamp stays on under battery backup so it is very clear which lamp is on battery and which is on mains.
I mean fittings that are switched on as a normal fitting but have emergency gear tray also. if you have these on with the other lights but isolate the perm live for the battery then how can you tell as the light would surely be kept on as is has the switch live to it alson with the non EM lights
That makes sense then. ive not really seen it done this way most of the time they isolate the entire circuit. Not an issue for most situations but in communal areas or other situations it can become n issue or even a danger
The maintained lamp always operates dimmer, and is noticeable. Every fitting is different, sore 4 tube fittings, you drop the perm live, and even with a switch live still there, the whole fitting goes dead, with one tube from battery. Others will stay on, with just the em tube from battery. Be wary though, some em lights specifically state that both lives must be switched for testing.
Of course "both lives" could be taken to mean phase and neutral! You were referring to both line conductors.
