what is the best exterior paint to use on walls on a building 150 years old

  2. What are the walls made of? cob? stone? brick? is it rendered?

    its rendered
its been painted lots of times and is flaking in large patches
i was thinking of scrapping it back and sealing eith an oil based stabilising solution then 2 coats of water based masonary paint
dont think i will use pliolite masonary paint as the wall wont breath through it

If the walls have been rendered with a cement render, then they are hardly going to breathe anyway. If the walls are cob, they should have a lime render, and be painted with a breathable paint,or good old limewash.

  6. Agree with barnjules cob walls "should" be lime rendered and as he says use a limewash for them to allow the walls to breath and prevent damp, if its cement render scrape off all the flakeing paint and CAREFULLY pressure wash off any mould and grime if the render is dusty/crumbly use a stabilising solution and then paint with Dulux TRADE!!! weathershield (purely because its dry/shower resistant in about half an hour)
