I have just been told my local trade shed is discontinuing the paints I have been using for around 7 years! it is Sandtext exterior gloss and primer/undercoat, I really like it as it is long lasting, is a three coat system, and is white spirit based. So am looking for a good alternative, I don't want to use Dulux weathershield because it is a 4 coat system. And I want a three coat , I looked at Sadolin supadec opaque today, looks interesting but am not sure about the water based aspect for three reasons. I recycle my white spirit so I never have to throw any down a drain where as what am I going to do with water? I am dubious of using water based in our climate. I do a lot of epoxy repairs so not sure how it would go on that. I looked at Johnstons again interesting, but they say 6 year life span Ideally I want 10 years. Any thoughts folks?
Sounds like you're over complicating things. Thought weathershield was a 3 coat system ?? Sikkens do a very good system and do an oil based satin for exterior
Even the Dulux one coat requires 4 coats according to their data! I generally use gloss as that's what most customers want. I repair sash windows and then repaint, I do a high class job so dont want to let my customers down by not sticking to the required number of coats, I don't see how I am over complicating , I just want an exterior paint system that is reliable.
Update, Trying out Sikkens Rubbol XD again, did use it a long time ago but in October when v. cold and it orange peeled, seems to be going on quite nicely in this hot weather, pretty good coverage.
I'm sure Dulux trade weathershield is a 3 part system. 1 - preserve primer with bp+ 2 - flexible undercoat 3 - gloss/satin Could be wrong tho
Boolay and mr moose, you are both correct, Boolay, preserver, undercoat and gloss, mr moose, preserver, undercoat and gloss....Dulux recommend 2 coats of undercoat if using the preserver/primer hence mr moose's 4 coats. so 3 part system applied in 4 coats.
