i am putting up a 6 foot fence ,do you just put the fence posts straight into the ground or do you protect the timber with anything
There is a previous thread that went into this in some detail. In the dim distant past I operated a Tanalising plant and they, Tanalith, reckoned that a softwood post if properly treated would last 25 years in ground contact however there are different grades of treatment depending on the strength of the solution and the length of time and pressure that the wood was sujected to in the treatment tank. I can't remember what the grades are but the toughest were for use in Australia, inside cooling towers and ,I think, mushroom boxes. If you get a post that has been treated to the correct spec you shouldn't have a problem.
