turn on straight away, have mop n' bucket ready, if it don't leak then it'll be ok forever,

 

if it weeps you can give it another nip up if there's enough thread left, if the threads all gone, wind out and repack cos if you overtighten a 'allready home' fitting, it could crack,

 

Try nipping first.
