Grass - real

Discussion in 'Just Talk' started by Deleted member 33931, Jan 21, 2017.

  1. Sis in law has a wee area - around 3m x 4m - which she'd ideally like to turf.

Problems - it's in permanent shade - tho' not 'dark' - and the ground can also be quite wet - it's lower than her neighb's lawn.

Before she goes 'artificial', is there any chance of getting grass to grow there?

A few heat lamps and I'm sure you'll get a good crop :)

You can get shade tolerant grasses, Fescue grasses are better for shade.

Can you not immprove drainge for the problem area.

    Better drainage is key.

Yep, either land drainage piping or gravel filled trenches (french drains), adding aggregate to the soil to aid drainage, even raising the area can help.

And if a new build then you have compacted builders waste, which is no good for drainage & little top soil.

  6. Thanks all. I'll investigate grass strains in more detail.

We've been told that adding a whole layer of pea-shingle around 6 inches down is good for lawns, but I'd need to make sure that sis is up to the task ('cos darned if I'm going to do it...)

Cardio exercise is good for you.:D

Pointless adding pea shingle, if the ground below doesn't drain freely.

Just done my daughters garden in artificial grass. Its the way to go.
It used to be so muddy underfoot with poor grass. It has transformed the garden.
Kids can play on it even when its been wet hours before.

  12. Tee-hee.

I have to say, for such a small area, it does make sense. Buying a mower/strimmer for a 3m x 4m patch would be a bit silly...

A perfect size, the astro comes in 4 metre widths :):)

Go for a better quality grass with 3 colours in it and around 30/35mm long.

This is who I bought mine from.

  14. Thanks again.

Yup - almost certainly she'll be going 'artificial', but a decent one. I've seen samples - remarkably convincing.

For your area its only £210.00 so well worth the outlay.
