Hi I am a reasonably skilled DIYer. However I have never hung a door before. I have done some quite nuanced tasks before like installing CCTV systems. However my carpentry skills are limited. Is this job best left to a professional, or with some research and effort, could I achieve a decent standard? Cheers IM
Depends if you're doing one door or ten, on your house or a mates, paid or not.... Watch a few videos on YouTube first mate, you'll understand that better than me boring you to death with terminology and things you can't physically see. No reason why you can't do a good job, but if you don't have the tools first you're up the creek.....
What you could spend on just the basic tools needed would paid for someone to do the job. If it's an expensive door, then I would get someone in to do the job.
Yep. Even with a Jack plane, cordless drill (no brace and bit!) Chisels, Stanley knife, marking gauge, drill bits, etc you're still looking minimum £200 on something acceptable, but then if you've got ten doors in your own house to do there's no better learning curve.....
Electric planner. Router. Go for it. I use router to cut ready for hinges. Screw hinges on first, stanley knife around then router flat. Use chisel to square up for hinge. You need 16mm drill and a 22mm for latch. Mark everything with pencil first. What can go wrong. Oh. Look for lock side as marked on top of door.
That's because they're not a necessity per se, more an expensive efficient luxury I mentioned the most bog standard hand tool kit for a first time door fitter not to scare them off, the price of your festool alone would make them c.rap a pigeon.
Thanks for the advice lads. I am installing expensive doors, so wouldn't want to make a mistake. I am looking to install 7 and have been quoted close to £700 for this. I am planning on doing up more places in the future. I have watched a few YouTube videos and the job does look quite technical when you factor in the ironmongery also.
