I was given a chisel that had a nick in so I filed the tip back but when I tried honing the bevel on a oilstone I got a 25 degree bevel but the tip is to thick. So do I need to keep the chisel set at 25 degrees and keep going on the oilstone.
You can use a bench grinder to get the inital angle, taking care not to overheat the blade & loosing the temper, handy to have a pot of water to keep cooling the blade. If you only have a oilstone,it will take time, most are double sided, so use coarse side first & just keep at it until you have a fine edge, then finish off edge with fine side of stone, remember to remove burr on rear of chisel. You may find a honing guide is useful to keep the correct angle when sharpening. Plenty of video's on Youtube to show you how to sharpen correctly..
