Hi, We need to replace an old combi boiler (installed around~2000). There are some budget issues so I need to do this as affordable as possible. There are a few parts: Thermostatic radiator Vales We know these are needed now in at least the bedrooms. It looks like buying these and installing them ourselves will be straight forward and is not illegal to do so? Room Thermostat Needs to be done by a professional? New Boiler The old boiler is installed on an external wall and was around the year 2000. If I bought a new boiler online (£800 inc VAT?), and simply had it installed by a Gas Safe registered person how much would this cost in SouthYorkshire? Power Flush of Central Heating £350ish by whoever installs the boiler? We plan to do the TRVs ASAP because this should be cheap (3 bedrooms, 3 TRVs) and easy, but what about getting a new boiler installed?
You'll need to get the boiler fitted by a gas safe pro...not diy able. You could take each radiator off in turn and flush through with a hose pipe then refit with new trvs. You can get trv/lock shield sets for less than a tenner.
There's no way we are fitting the boiler ourselves that's definitely being done by a professional! Why would we flush through each radiator like that? And how long will it take to fit each new TRV, is it an easy job?
Flush any crud out the radiators, prob better than a power flush anyway. I'd allow yourself an hour per radiator to take off old valves, flush and put back together and that's going pretty steady. It all depends on your skill level and experience plus having the right tools.
Thermostatic radiator Vales No, you can do this yourself. TRVs on all radiators with the exception of the one in the same room as the room thermostat. Room Thermostat As long as it's not in a "protected zone" you can do this yourself. New Boiler how much would this cost in SouthYorkshire? £300 - £400 as long as all your work has been pressure tested and no leaks and you don't try and involve the engineer in anything else!! Power Flush of Central Heating Take the radiators off whilst you are fitting the new TRVs and flush them out in turn with a hose pipe (then no need for a power flush and makes a better job). New radiators are cheap and more efficient these days and it may be worth your while fitting new ones. Don't forget to fit a TF1 filter. Tappy,
Give the rads a gentle-but-firm (ie - a good clunking, but don't dent it...) thumping with a rubber mallet or similar whilst it's being hosed through. Concentrate on the bottom of the rad, especially in t'middle. Make a note of what comes out, and how much - this will tell you what state your system is in. Since most of the crud ends up in the rads, this is a good way of shifting most of it. The rest can hopefully be removed over a few weeks using a filter as Crows says along with some chemicals - eg Sentinel X800. But read the intrucies it first.
the boiler install cost will depend on a few things like drain position, flue and boundry position, gas pipework size etc..... get 3 quotes and see what they advise, i would expect the have to have the gas upgraded if the meters more than 6m away. you will idealy need to have a magnetic fliter, possibly a scale reducer and auto bypass. x400 if you want to leave a cleaner in for a while, x800 only works for 24hr.
