Thinking of boarding out a loft so it can be used for storage purposes (1930's, Semi Detached, UK) . However I am concerned that it may not be suitable.

    The joists are 3 x 2 at 16"centres. Spanning approx 4m.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That's pretty normal, are there internal walls underneath the ceiling?

    Yes there is.

I am considering cross battening the existing floor joists with 4x2 C16, I understand that it will not add additional strength but will it not help distribute the weight/load more evenly? Especially when the cross battens will be crossing a load bearing wall?

It will only be for general storage
