The ceramics are down to stay! it would be a massive job to remove them question is what adhesives and screed to use?o_O

  2. Hi Jonny.

Sis-in-law is having some vinyl flooring planks put down soon. It ain't Karndean but 'Allura' and I'd rate it even higher than Karndean.

Anyhoo, the guys doing the job are pros and Karndean specialists - so experienced in this sort of thing. Her floor is concrete and already has a ~3mm screed layer on it. However, they plan to add a further 'feather' coat over this to make the surface perfect for the adhesive and flooring. This 'feather' will only be around one mm thick, I'm guessing.

So, I'd imagine something similar would work for you? Obviously it would have to be something that bonds perfectly to the ceramic tiles, but I can't see that being an issue (with the correct preparation, of course).

BUT, are you DIYing this? If so, I'd contact Karndean directly and ask them. That's expensive flooring - you'd be nuts to risk it going wrong.

(I presume you are talking about stick-down vinyl planks/tiles?)

Yes I will be doing it myself, local company's want a fortune to lay them (tiles) some where around £15 per mtr, plus all materials, they seem to try scaring you about the guarantee. Yes they are dear to buy and vary as much as ten quid by local companies, ceramic tiles can easily cost as much, so I'm not particularly worried about the cost or guarantee! but just want as much info as poss before starting.

All this scaremongering dosn't really wash with me, as if any thing were to go wrong Kardean wouldn't do anything at all, they would just say you should have used an approved company and paid your £1000 plus

Use a good 2 part latex self leveller over the tiles first, you may need a second thinner coat on top of that to get a smooth finish as the bumps can be seen through the flooring if not done properly.
Then as long you use the correct adhesive for the flooring you purchase you will be fine. As long the existing tiles are solid I should add.

Thank's for advice, do you think I should use a general self leveller on top of the latex screed even if it's only 1/2 mm thick to help achieve that so important ultra smooth finish.
As far as I know Karndean do a primer but as yet Iv'e not had a chance to suss out the cost as it is still early days.
