Hi folks i'm new to the site i have ordered an ikea kitchen and plan on fitting myself, the problem i have is the laminate worktop.... the planner at ikea suggested a custom length of 4m for the main worktop and two pieces joined at the corners each 1.3m and 1.9m to avoid any joins in the middle. My question is this we are fitting this to an old house and i'm worried that if the walls are not totally straight the large main worktop may prove difficult to install with gaps or uneven parts....... Is this how you guys would do this or am i better to get smaller pieces with a join in the middle....
I don't see how those pan drawers will open with the sink bowl in place, some sinks have a depth of 230mm.
Usually you scribe in the back and any minor gaps are covered by by the splash back. If I was fitting this worktop I would put in the l/h top first up to the window wall then all the way to the other wall and then a short section on the right.
I think the plan needs rejigging. I would look at centralizing the cooker on the wall. If it were my kitchen, I would go for a 900m range cooker, and double bowl sink. A good kitchen fitter will be able to scribe the back edge of the worktop to make it fit, there are tiles, which will cover any gaps. The 2 windows are not at the same height, is this correct.
Thx for the replies folks the problem is ikea worktops only come in 2.4m or 1.8 meters so there isnt enough length to cover left to right with out joining somewhere on the front......would i be better going for the custom 4m worktop chippie ? and hope the walls aren't too warped
lol sorry............the guy at ikea suggested custom made worktops of 4m ,1.92 on the left and 1.38 on the right i just worried about the big main piece due to the walls and also the cost and awkwardness of working with a 4m length of worktop in a small kitchen....
Typical of IKEA to sell worktops in strange lengths. I wouldn't worry too much about the walls they can be scribed in or covered with the upstand. The range cooker is a good idea but you say you have already ordered the kitchen. My biggest worry would be snapping the top once you have done the cut outs for the sink and oven. You would have to do these once the worktop was fitted and mitred. You don't want to try joining worktops in a length. Be aware that there is no service void behind IKEA cabinets.
Two standard 4.1M tops will be perfect. You may need them to be extra deep for Ikea units - I think their tops are 630mm deep and their base units are deeper than the standard 570mm? I would get the sink out of the corner by having it LHD. Then the middle top is about 3.3M long and the other two are about 1.8M long. You can get a good price on decent Duroplal tops online or from a local laminate specialist. Also, if it is not too late, get that oven & hob in the middle of the two windows. Personally I think Ikea kitchens offer a great deal for the money. They are a pig to install though. All the best with your project.
