    Hi. Retiling the bathroom.

2 walls solid brick and block, 2 plasterboard stud.

Old tiles are std 6x6 inch ceramic. New will be large natural marble.

Do I need to fix HardiBoard as well (on top of) the existing plasterboard when the lod tiles are off, or, can I just fix marble to the existing plasterboard?

600x600 will be far to heavy for plasterboard.

You will need to remove plasterboard

Depending on the strength of the joist? (add noggins if ness) and then fix 12mm Hardibacker

    Read below.........

When considering what tile you choose there are things to consider, which are beyond the normal considerations of colour, finish and appearance. These considerations are often practical and thus can be missed by the normal tile shopper.

One of these considerations that is not already covered in our how to choose tiles guide is weight. The weight of your tile and the weight limits for various substrates/surfaces, should be considered before choosing your tile.

Here is a table outlining the various weights taken from the British Standards for Tiling and Tilers:

    Substrate Type

Plaster Walls and Skimmed Plaster Board
    Plywood Walls
    Plaster Board Walls (Unskimmed)
    Tile Backer Board Walls
    Block Work Walls
    Rendered Walls

    Weight Limit per square metre

    20kg per m2
    30kg per m2
    32kg per m2
    40-50kg per m2
    40-50kg per m2
    40-50kg per m2

It is always best to consider this before sourcing your tiles. A approximate guide for weights of tiles before adhesive is here:

    Tile Type

    Ceramic
    Porcelain (8mm thick)
    Porcelain (10mm thick)
    Natural Stone (10mm thick)
    Natural Stone (20mm thick)

    Weight per square metre

    12kg per m2
    20kg per m2
    25kg per m2
    28kg per m2
    35kg per m2

Just to add. It will be quicker to rip off the old plasterboard and fit new HardieBacker than to get the original board to a state where you can tile or put backer on top.
