    Looking good.:)

    Is canal disused?

No, its the Basingstoke Canal but has been drained down last month for winter maintenance - I think the bit at the bottom is around the waterline.

Good to see the canal still going strong, haven't poked around the Basingstoke Canal for many many years.

It is good and strong at the moment, but I hear the funding regime may change which will put the long term viability of many canals at risk. Not much traffic in this central section due to the many locks - probably half a dozen barges upstream towards Greywell, and quite a few downstream before it meets up with the River Way.

Unlikely Greywell Tunnel will ever reopen, & that section of canal remains disused.:(

To sell it, wouldn't the thieves need a fence?

Won't capillary action draw water between the sleeve and the post?

    Looks like a neat job.

Didn't know there were mortised concrete posts available.

Did mine a few years ago using concrete slotted posts then sturdy fence panels just slided in between the grooves.

Looks good, am pleased you didn't fit solid panels spoiling the veiw.

Agree, looks so much better, & one other advantage you can spot anyone loitering other side of fence.

In the eyes of the law, I'm sure they would regard it as a minor offence, but the poor victims will undoubtedly have their outlook on life changed forever, and put new barriers up against the world.

The fencing guy left 4 large round posts behind from the previous fence as they're in pretty good condition. Must have been in the ground many years, but it drains well, and they were likely treated with the old copper/arsenic stuff.

The gravel boards are 2" thick, due to the way they fit on the concrete posts, that minimises the amount of concrete on show to just the posts.

  17. Nice bodge.

Er, I mean, nice, Mr Bodge.

Why are the arrisses on your side - you don't have a neighb on t'toher side to upset?

Burglars are a pain at the best of times, giving them a ladder to enter your garden isnt a good idea. ;););)

I always recommend this for that very reason

As above - t'other side is public access and it would be a pain in the arris if people could easily climb over.
