Metal Foil on edge of double glazed window panes

Our 30 year old wooden windows have a strip of aluminium foil approx 5-10mm round the edges of the double glazed window panes on the internal and external faces. Over the years the foil has been damaged in places e.g. is ripped in places, over painted, etc and now looks quite a mess. How best is it to hide the tape at minimal cost or can it be removed? Should it have been removed when the windows were originally installed? Would removing the foil compromise the double glazing?

    Any advice appreciated.

I would have thought that there should be beading over all that.

As chippie says. This question should never arise, because that outer part of sealed unit should always be hidden by the beads.

Glass looks too small and the putty beading is not big enough to cover the foil.

Don't touch the silver round the two panes, you'll knacker the unit . As chippie and HA said , get beading that sits plumb and level with the silver.
