    HI

I am looking for a lock/handle for an external wooden (back) door that can be opened from the inside just by the handle but needing a key from the outside. This to replace or even supplement the existing mortise lock.

This would be very similar to the handle on uPVC doors with split spindle but for a wooden door instead.

I would prefer not to buy a new uPVC door if possible.

Basically it is for my elderly Mum who does not want to be locked inside the house when everybody else has gone out. She has severe difficulty with turning keys or operating a Yale type lock. But for her safety we do not want to leave the door accessible to intruders.

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Thanks
    Dave

Hi Dave, just need a euro sashlock to replace your existing lock. You can then fit euro handle and get a euro cylinder lock with a 'thumb turn' for the inside and key for the outside.

Prob need a 70mm euro cylinder if your door is about 40mm thick.

Ah...just re-reading, might not be quite what she needs!

Poor dear will be buggered if she goes outside and the door shuts!

Good point. You can get a reasonably largish thumb turn...that may be the answer, our hosts have quite a few.

No, if she's outside, she'll need a key.

No she won't...only if its a self locking setup. The thumb turn/key is for the bolt, latch operated by handle.

Btw, retro fitted the setup mentioned to 2 doors today...different brands though. Just needed a bit of chiseling/easing for new euro sashlock. Thumb turn very light to the touch, think would be ideal for your mum.
