Ordinary fireplace paint?

By ordinary I mean that it's not for a log burner, just a plug-in electric fire - all I can find is posts about log burners & real fires. At the moment we have a stove-look-alike electric (fan heater!) fire, but the base & inner walls of the fireplace opening are old & grubby. We could line with hardiebacker but for now I just wondered if we could clean, re-point the brickwork & paint the concrete base (needs to be a tough & resilient paint) & brick walls. I don't think it needs to be a super heat-resistant paint but I don't want to break any safety regulations. I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me what sort of paint to use?
