On a job at the moment and a friend of mine lined a ceiling and pva,d it first then pasted then hung. Weve come back the next day and the papers starting to lift. What gives?

Was the pva over emulsion and how long between the pva and papering?

Im not sure. Is it not ok to just paper over? Also i notice yesterday brown spots are coming through the paper

  4. Almost certainly the wallpaper paste reactivated the PVA which basically returned to its liquid form - the weight of the paper did the rest.

Why did he PVA it first? What was the ceiling surface like - an old one or newly skimmed?

Brown spots? That's weird. Rusty p'board nails or old grease or nicotine stains I guess?

If it was an old ceiling, dirty with years of grease (is it near the kitchen?), then PVA would struggle to stick to it anyway. It may have needed a proper scrub-down with cleaners first, then a proper primer - or paste straight on if clean enough.
