Program Water Heater To Save Energy

My hot water bill can sometime be pretty expensive because I use electric heating(yay California). It would save me quite a bit of money if the water heater was only on when necessary and recharged during off-peak times.

I already program my thermostat to save energy. Am I able to do the same for my water heater? Can it integrate with the common home thermostats?

I found a few promising leads online but nothing really stood out. Appreciate any help!
