Hi, Looking for help on a DIY job - will a reciprocating saw make fast work and a good job of reducing the depth of a sturdy ready built wardrobe or is there a better, cost effective alternative?
If you like the wavy-lined, chip-edged look, then - yeah - a reciprocating saw will certainly make fast work of it. Tell us more about this wardrobe - photo if possible. But, frankly, a hand saw would be better than a recip saw. The main drawback to a hand saw is that it could leave chips on the 'through' side, but that can be managed with careful use and other means. If it's a solid wood carcase, then you should be able to get a really clean cut with a decent saw. The more obvious 'powered' choice would be a circular saw, I guess. Or possibly a jig-saw run against a guiding batten to keep it straight.
