i have a 1980's house with some external walls consisting of bradstone concrete stones of random sizes. I want to render over this to end up with a smoothish finish. I believe that bradstone is difficult to render over using traditional scratch coatings,as it's difficult to get it to adhere to. Does anyone have experience covering over bradstone? Don't need external insulation as the cavity is already insulated.
Most plasters hate rendering over Bradstone,as you cannot be 100% certain of it bonding to the stonework.
Builder has recommended grinding away stones which are proud trying to create a straighter wall prior to render. Have read somewhere that removing some of the mortar between the stones allows for better adhesion?
So much work grinding back the blocks, & raking out joints, still 100% adhesion is a certianity, how big is the area your thinking of rendering. Rendering mesh, has to be a Stainless Steel Wire Mesh over the Bradstone blocks might be an option, but it ain't going to be cheap to do the job with all the prep. Better to forget the idea I think.
Approx 80 sq. m. We want to remove some arches made of the bradstone which look dated. The house (which internally we love), looks dated on the outside, far to much bradstone on show.
Of course scudding works, have seen a few very good Plasterers doing it. On bradstone walls I do not know, but worth a try.
I know it works on blockwork, but not on Bradstone, I speak from experience on that. Ended up taking the bradstone walls down & rebuilding them in block, then rendered, was the lesser of two evils.
Even bigger job grinding back the bradstone, attaching mesh & rendering. Can't think of any other method, than the two I've mentioned.
Something at the back of my mind tells me that altering the external appearance/character of a house to that extent requires planning permission. Can't remember where I heard that or whether it's still the case. Someone will know for definite though if only the local planning department.
Guess that's what we have to do then! This is our forever home, so over time you forget the worst bits...
