I have a feeling I could do with a new lintel. I chipped some cracked mortar off the face and found this. There is no cracking above inside or out, so I believe an early replacement is in order.
I am in Dorset if that is any help in estimating costs, although I know that it does vary.
The lintel is 1400mm in length.
So any ideas of what I could be expected to pay out of my pension?

    Cheers Peter

You can get a 1500mm lintel, width: 100mm Height 150mm.

Is it a solid wall or cavity.

Are all the other openings the same? I am thinking to install brick or (soldiers) course possibly on a single leaf catnic, can you get hold of matching bricks?

Hi Jitender it is a cavity wall. I dont know how wide the lintel is.
It is the only window with a lintel like that

Might have to do some investigative work.

Very likely just carrying the outer leaf, But just to make sure i would take out a brick above the lintel to check.

What are the other lintels like?

All other ground floor lintels are of a curved brick arch design. Upstairs the windows go to the roof.
Annexe on the back so all new.
I would not undertake this work myself.
Just wondered how much it would hit me in the wallet.

    I think there''s 3 options.

    1. Replace lintel with similar sized concrete per-stressed lintel
    2. Insert single leaf lintel (catnic,IG, keystone etc), more matching brick required, the brick will be 9", so option to install a full soldier or 2/3- which requires removal of another course of bricks 93 in total)
    3. Or get a new arched lintel made up matching existing radius of existing opening.
    1 = Cheapest 3= Most expensive.

i am looking at replacing like for like.
The window is the only one in a side wall and is not in plain view, except for the neighbours.

Recently the guy opposite me was having a garage door changed.
Ours are the usual up and over.
Being a nosy S**D I was watching the new install.
The replacement was also an up and over type.
But the point where it hinged was in a different position.
When they first tried to open it.
The ingoing edge nearing the ceiling hit a metal lintel some 3 foot or so
into the garage. The garages doors are 3 foot out front of the main house wall.
So this was the main lintel over the garage span supporting the upper story.
Lots of head scratching from fitters. Phones getting used.
30 mins later van and Oxyacetylene cylinders set up.
They cut a section of the lintel out that was fowling the new up and over.
The whole width of the garage. I hope it was well rated at the original design.
I never said a word they were bigger than me.
But that must of been a NONO.

I keep looking for cracks .

Have you told your neighbour? This has the potential to be really serious: did these comedians turn up on horses and wearing big hats????????????

    Well,

NO I did not, Its not like my mothers old street where every one knew
every one else. And spoke to each other.
Most are not into understanding this type of thing.
I just keep my nose out.
Its not like me really but I was warned if you know what I mean about
    causing trouble lol.

    Ok on arriving on horses.
I just could not believe it.
Maybe the had the correct GAS Safe like certificate to cut RSJs/Lintels.

    Take care

Causing trouble? How will you sleep if, God forbid, it falls down and hurts/kills someone? Man up fella and tell your neighbour, all he has to do is notice it and ask Building Control for an opinion. You don't have to be involved. These people need to be exposed.
