    Hi,

I have this rusty old gate I am try to fix.

I think my best bet is ripping it off and starting again.

Any advice on the replacement stuff I should get would be great.

    Thanks

The frames of the gates doesn't look to bad.

The wooden posts are knackered, I would fit RSJs in their place, welding the existing hinges on to them.

Def start again all depending on what you expect from the finished outcome asthetic wise and budget etc. With big gates, you need good strong posts and proper diagonal bracing on whatever gates go back in. Design and work around your new gates and bring the fencing and posts to them.

Replace the lot, sell the old gates to a scrap merchant!

Yeah the previous owner installed them, not me.

Not looking for an amazing gate, just a basic gate that isn't falling apart.

Useful video - helps a lot

As Phil says above, I would go and get either an old RSJ or Box section and replace the posts. Shouldn't be too expensive to get some knocked up by a mate with a welder or steel fabricator. I would get some spring load jockey wheels fitted to the centres

In regards to the materials I need, how much do you think I will need to spend?

Seems that I will need a couple of RSJs, new hinges and new gate frontage. Potentially jockey wheels also.

Look on Ebay for rsj's, box section might be a better option for mounting hinges, can find them cheap, also try Freecycle,Freegle, that's how I got one for my previous place.

Try a few salvage yards or scrap dealers

I dunno, looks like the hinges are salvageable and if you are gonna get the hinges welded to RSJ you can have that bottom right bar welded back on to the gate too. Good to go! Cost=welder and RSJ x 2 + fixing into large hole.

    Mr. HandyAndy - Really
