A builder has suggested that i should put a mixture of sand and cement around the outside of my house to stop water entering . I have never heard of this. Is this common practice ? What is the reasoning behind it ?
I don't know, the house is sort of at the bottom of a hill and he suggested that to prevent water getting in through the outside walls he would put a mixture of sand and cement around the house. He is from eastern Europe so maybe he means something different however I couldn't find anything about this online which is why I thought I would ask .
after a bit more research i think that sand and cement is rendering and that probably they meant applying it to the walls rather than around the foundation of the house
Yes, if your existing walls are in poor condition and are porous to water/rain, then a render coat is one quick way of improving things. It is a specialist job and requires the correct mixes of scratch and top coats, along with the right sand and additives. So make sure your chosen builder is completely au fait with this. Or else it could be - snigger - aw fate for yer hoosie... (Man, I need to lie down after that one... )
Employing Eastern Europeans is usually because of the price, no tax, insurance so the local trades lose out.
Do not cement render your house. You need a building engineer to provide a solution to deal with the issue not simply 'manage' it.
