this is probable a hard question with little info, but hopefully someone can give me a steer.

I need to get to the roof on the gable end of a two story house (to look for where damp is occuring), where I need to access, has had an extension built underneath one story, where a tower would normally fit .. so scaffold needs to be built over the extension (pitched roof) and up against the wall (somehow ?)

I have got a quote of £480 for a weeks leasing, delivery and erection costs .. does this sound about right or a tad expensive ? travel for the erector is about 1 mile

I am still waiting for other scaffolders to come back with quotes, this is the 1st one (maybe the only one) I 'll get back

Scaffold costs usually include one months rent. If this is for a week what is the ongoing rental as this can add up.

    Is vat to be added?

no there was VAT on top of that yet to be added. Never used scaffolding before, always managed to get away with ladders and chancing it. Two recent near misses, one with a fire which I could have lost an eye, and one on a ladder have made me see sense long after I should have.

The price was erection and for a week, I needed to call him back to discuss other costs - does it seem a round about acceptable figure, from what little info I gave you. I imagined erecting, delivering, dismantling one side of an average gable around £150 - £180 per week .. am I shooting well below the mark ? I have no idea of prices for this type of thing ..

His quotation should have shown the weekly rent, be wary of anyone who doesn't show their prices up front.

    Get two or more quotes.

A while ago we had a huge house fully scaffolded including three tall chimney scaffolds. It cost about £7,000 to erect and hire for three or four months. Four main lifts, all fully boarded, all independant scaffold (rendered house) with two conservatories to bridge over.

We made the mistake of hiring scaffold rubbish chutes too and these eventually cost more to hire than if we'd bought them :^O

Can you do it from a cherry picker?

I was looking at a cherry picker only this morning, yes I could although the reach over the extension might be pushing it, but (without jinxing myself) I can not see this being anywhere near a months job, and I could also do the other end of the house too. I will look again at HSS (huddersfield) unless anyone can mention another or better hire shop ?

A specialist acess company that only hire out cherrypickers will probably be cheaper than hss eg:

    www.nationwideaccess.co.uk

Some firms will even make a site visit to advise of the most suitable machine .

£650-750 + vat. There are some small companies out there that are not  vat registered. Ask how long the scaffold can be up for before going on  rent. Some companies prices are based on 1 month then rent per week  others 2 weeks then rent per week. Weekly rent rates are usually 5% of  the erection price per week. Try *, they  are short of work at the moment so might be keen on their pricing.

I'm paying £20 per metre per lift. Plus vat. This is for a standard period of up to six weeks. It may be extra for a gantry to span over another roof. Make sure that the price that you get is for the total job and for at least the minimum period that you need.
