Hi, I've had a problem with slow draining toilet for a while. It only slow drains when there's solid waste, but sometimes even toilet paper has difficulty going down.

I've tried all sorts of chemical cleaners, and lots of plunging, but every plumber I call wants to pull it out to take a look (it's all built in, and doing that would mean smashing up my bathroom, which isn't ideal). One plumber simply sat there plunging it for an hour.

There's no gurgling, and there is no manhole to look in, since I'm on the 9th floor. There's a soil stack just outside the apartment, but opening that doesn't reveal anything interesting , to my untrained eye.

My next step is to get an underwater camera off eBay and use some rods to make it steerable, to take a look, but before I do that, anyone have any suggestions?

Almost certainly a blockage in there somewhere. Rather than buy cameras and stuff yourself why not call out a specialised drainage company, they have all the CCTV, jetting and rodding gear to deal with these jobs and whats more they do it day in day out so they know what their looking for.

Mostly because I've so far called out three companies, and each one has told me they either don't know, or they want to smash my bathroom to get the toilet out. But more because I don't want to pay £££ for something I can easily do myself, with a little guidance from the nice people here. It's what the internet's for, surely (well, that and kittens).

I can borrow rods and a water jet, and an underwater camera only costs £25 (paying a man to plunge my toilet for an hour cost a lot more than that). I'd rather start with that, and only call Dyno-rod if that's not successful.

Did a toilet a few years, ended up removing toilet because of blockage, cause a kid's hairbrush wedged across the pipe.
No amount of rodding would shift the blockage.

if you're 9 floors up its unlikely to be the soil pipe or the folks below would be complaining more than you are, the liklyhood is a blockage twix your toilet and the out side, Its very common in these cases for it to be an unfriendly object like a toilet smelly block hanger,a sanitry towel,a earbud,a toy car, or many other wild guesses, it will mean taking the pan out sooner or later, I'm sure it can be done without smashing the whole bathroom up,

Try plunging or emptying some water out of the bowl, then pour three kettlefuls of boiling water in there. Leave it for an hour then try flushing again.

I tried buying a camera do a drain camera myself, waste of money.

Called out a specialist they had better equipment ans the camera was self leveling when roded through the drainage pipe, the images broadcast were of good quality. Was charged £350 to have a full ctv carried out, and it was all jet washed using a 'rootball' adapter as well as some roots were coming through. There was only minor movement in the pipe. Well worth the money just for the peace of mind. You will probably get it cheaper if you look around, i needed it done quick.

Nothing mysterious. Just enough to replenish water level, and enough to disperse the cold water.

Someone who knows what their doing should be able to remove pan without smashing it out, or did some idiot make it removable??. Should always make maintainable. If nessasary break it out and replace, after fixing problem.
