Hi, I am looking to build a stud wall for the first time and have trawled the various posts but can't find answers to all of my questions regarding fixings. I am using 75mm x 50mm timber and 12mm plasterboard. My questions are: 1. What size of screws should I be using to fix my top plate; 2. What size of screws should I be using to fix my sole plate; 3. What size of screw and wall plug should I use to fix the side stud to a brick wall; and 4. What size of screw should I use to fix the studs and noggins (I know some prefer nails). Any help is appreciated. Cheers Chris
5mm or No. 10 screws I find are a good size for this kind of work, length depends on what you're screwing into. For 50mm timber, add on 1.5" or so, so around 90mm??
Reisser Cutter screws are mentioned a lot on here, they do a 5mm x 90mm part cut with the top 30mm not threaded https://reisser.co.uk/shop/cutter-screws-5-0mm-2/ Its just h-t-t-p not h-t-t-p-s
+1 for reisser screws, I use 100mm no5 for studding but 90s will work just as well and use a brown plug
These plugs have also been mentioned on here as being very good http://www.screwfix.com/p/fischer-high-performance-universal-plugs-ux8-4-5-6-x-50mm-100-pack/20669
But do NOT use cutter* type screws in plugs - they will tear the plugs and not give a secure fixing. Just use ordinary woodscrews - such as plain Reisser R2s. *Reisser call them cutter, Spax, TimCo, Screwfix &c all have their own names.
