Suitable worktop for undermounted sink

What's the best value worktop where an undermounted sink could be used? I'm guessing that the work top needs to be a solid material as the side of it will show (and need to be waterproof) where the cut out for the sink is. Unless there is a way of finishing that edge with a non-solid material worktop?

You have a few options,..... Wooden, Granite, Quartz ,Solid Surface (such as Corian, Hanex etc). There are a number of other Solid Surface products available, but far too many to list...!!!!

The "best value" is a matter of opinion, but the cheapest is probably Wooden worktops.
The downside to wooden tops is they require the most attention and maintenance compared to the other options.

Thanks snezza30 - I don't think we'll go for a wooden one - any thoughts on what would be the next cheapest? I need to get an idea of the price before we get too wedded to the undermounted sink idea!

Probably something like Bushboard Encore or something similar. There are plenty of options, but this is the one that I've done a lot of.

It has a 6mm Solid Surface material mounted on a particle board core, giving a total thickness of 44mm. An undermount sink is then recessed into the particle board and gets bonded to the underside of the solid surface. You can use various types of sink, either Ceramic, Stainless Steel, Granite Resin, or they even do a Solid Surface type bowl made of the same material as the surface of the worktops which will enable you to have a seamless waterproof joint.

You may even find a cost effective Quartz, but you would need to shop around with your local stone fabrication companies.

    Good Luck!

Thanks again - I had a look at the Bushboard Encore videos online and it looks good. The only scary bit was routing the drainer grooves - I don't really want to be able to see the particle board through the surface...

Are you planning on fitting it yourself then....????!!!!!

If you are seriously contemplating a Solid Surface type top, I would advise you against attempting to do it yourself. There are a number of specialist tools & knowledge you would need to do the job right. Routing the grooves for the drainer is straightforward if you have the right tools, and the knowledge to use them correctly

My advice would be to get a local kitchen fitter to give you a price for the work. It will work out a lot cheaper than another set of worktops!!!!!

No I wasn't planning to fit in myself, thanks.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the following?

Using something like Bushboard Encore - does it look feasible to have a cantilever (overhang) in the red area below? The reason is that the drawer unit that can be seen under the red lined area needs to be removable so it can't support the worktop over. There is a washing machine in the corner. Obviously there would be battening against the walls to support and anchor the worktop but in effect there is no support in the red outlined area.

I would ask Bushboard but I can't seem to find a link to a technical department.
