I have an outside plug which is on the downstairs ring main. I want to be able to isolate the power to the outside plug from inside the house. I was thinking of wiring in an ordinary light switch to control the power to the socket, but I can't help feeling that this must contravene some regulation. Can anyone tell me if it does, and if so any potential solutions?

You should use a 20A light switch.

Yes, you need a 20 amp DP switch.

A 20amp double pole switch is what you need. This is NOT A LIGHT SWITCH.

I hope that you do not. You should have a SOCKET outside your house !

Hang on guys, are you suggesting that this person puts a 20A rated switch on a circuit that may have 32A protection? I think you have assumed a 20A radial circuit is used to feed this . My solution would be to use a 13A fused connection unit (spur) as the control for the outside circuit, this not only is adequately rated but will also provide overcurrent protection. Please ensure that the outside socket is protected at the consumer unit by a 30mA RCD.

Yes, perfectly normal way to go about things.
    Overcurrent protection will be provided.
HINT: the plugs on the the things being plugged in to the outside socket.

@DIYRich he does have a point re the RCD. Is the ring final RCD protected, or are you using an RCD socket?

Also, there is no requirement for the socket to be protected by a 30mA RCD at the Consumer Unit.

The outside plug regardless of it being outside IP68 housed should be on a spur from a 13Amp fused unit indoors.
After all it is an FCU...

After all it is just a double socket spurred from a ring final. Why "must" it need an FCU.?
An FCU is not needed for other spurred sockets.
