Hey guys, I'm attempting my first DIY tiling project in the porch and need some advice on the type of adhesive I should buy.

The porch has existing ceramic tiles which I want to tile on top of but when looking at adhesives it looks like normal self levelling adhesive such as http://www.screwfix.com/p/mapei-ultraplan-3240-self-levelling-compound-grey-25kg/4959f isn't suitable for tiling on top of existing tiles?

I've seen that http://www.screwfix.com/p/mapei-keraquick-tile-adhesive-white-5kg/94867 mixed with http://www.screwfix.com/p/mapei-latex-plus-white-1-5kg/48884 is the recommended option but that will end up costing ~£20 a mix where I think I need about 4 mixes as opposed to 1 bag of self levelling adhesive for £20.

    What are my options?

Rip up exsisting tiles, then use leveling compound if required & retile.

I presume floor under exsisting tile is concrete, so you would need to prime with SBR at 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 if you needed to use leveling compound.

Thanks for the reply! If I was trying to avoid ripping up the existing tiles would my only option be to mix the Mapei Keraquick adhesive with the Latex?

I'm not sure whether it is concrete beneath but I'm pretty sure it will be

self levelling compound is not an adhesive .it is not used to stick tiles to anything ,but to make unlevel floors level. if your existing floor tiles àre in good condition ,not loose or cracked, and reasonably level ,then a flexible adhesive will do the job of bonding new to old. you must prepare the surface first though .

Have never liked tiling on exsisting tiles, so much hassle in prep to make sure new tiles bond securely.

Thanks for clearing that up terrymac, I got confused because it was in the Tile Adhesives & Grout section of the site :(.

So would something like http://www.screwfix.com/p/mapei-keraquick-rapid-set-flexible-tile-adhesive-grey-10kg/5769p be sufficient to tile on top of existing ceramic tiles?

Am I right in thinking that S1 is the classification for the adhesives flexibility?

  7. For tiling on top of existing tiles, you would need to mix that with 2 tubs of item No 48884 Latex.

Provided that 2 x Mapei Latex Plus White 1.5kg (48884) additives are mixed with Mapei Keraquick Rapid-Set Flexible Tile Adhesive Grey 10kg, the adhesive can be used to bond tiles on top of existing clean, dry, solid and sound tiles.

bear in mind " rapid set" adhesives that set in 3 hours ,give you a very short open time. in other words once you mix some you only have about 15 mins to use it, in this current weather. you would benefit ,as its your first tiling attempt ,on using a flexible adhesive that is not rapid setting .I personally have never used the range offered by the manufacturer you quoted above. S1 and S2 bs standards referring to the adhesives ability to deform ,flex. go to your local tile suppliers , maybe where you are buying tiles, tell them what you are planning to do and its your first go at tiling ,ask them to recommend a suitable adhesive from their range ,they are usually cheaper anyway.

Thank you for the replies guys! I think I will bite the bullet and pull up the existing tiles for a thorough job!
