Today went to an old boiler with hot water problems, Decided it was definatly the diverter valve at fault as the cylinder stat was fine. Finally found it after an hours search. Some brigt spark had hidden it under here. But on the positive side he had written "Valve underneath" on the floorboards
I found one under floorboards at a property in Manchester a couple of years ago. Thought it was the only one. Clearly not.
Wow, Years ago I was working on a new private estate in Sunderland. I was at the pipe bending bench just in the garden of the house I was working on. A lady approached me as she had been told I was the plumber. Asked if I could help out on her house ( occupied maybe a year on an adjoining site) She said carpets downstairs were getting mouldy and not lots of hot water. I took a quick visit a Bait Time ( ooops lunch time ) . First thing I noticed was the whole of downstairs had a damp feeling. I lifted a corner of the lounge carpet, green mouldy. I took a walk outside and saw water coming out of the AIR BRICKS on the gable. They were maybe 5 course up above Damp course. I pulled the carpet back cut a floor board section between joists. Your view was pipes mine was water over maybe 18 inches deep over the main founds and over the whole of the ground floor. Joists and flooring were passed there best. I knocked a few bricks out below the Damp proof course. WOW what a sight. It looked like the Dam Busters Raid. I just gave advice to get in touch with the previous builder. I never found out what went down . Have wondered . Johnn M
PB, I have wondered for 55 years. I did mean to visit the site. Maybe there is just a big hole where it sank. But it was a hell of a lot of H2O Bye Johnny M
Wow, I wonder if its at the bottom of that hole.. Quite a job to pick up the ends of the services I bet. There has been a few of these sinkholes reported lately I see. Joking aside I live in Newcastle. Our immediate area must be littered with mine shafts. The new property we purchased in 1978 is on a concrete raft not as it was standard founds. So I think there is a clue in that. Take care, Just saw my old blowlamp in a box in the loft. Its been cold for over 50 years now lol. I best leave it there , Well you never know when it may be needed .lol Johnny M
I was in the process of buying a house and arranged the surveyor with the mortgage company. We met on site and went round the property there were signs of previous movement but nothing recent. However, although he said there were a few issues we could see there was nothing major he had a bad feeling about the property, so we erred on the side of caution and left it. Another couple bought the house and 6 months later the double height bay window fell into a hole in the front garden. The houses either side had to be evacuated while they underpinned.
