hi , just ripped out some old cupboard understairs , need to cover the undeneath of stairs now whats the best way of boarding 12mm mdf of board n skim ??

  2. What type of string are you planning to use?

(Ok, it beats the 'how long is a piece of...')

Are you DIYing this? If so, have you 'skimmed' before?

Really, you could use either method, but - a few pros and cons:

MDF - more difficult to cut and has to be done accurately as what you do is what you'll see. Can't disguise joins except with beading or similar. If you cut the edges wobbly, you'll need to fill any gaps with decorator's filler or similar, or if it's a visible outside edge you may have to attach a decorative timber beading over it (depends whether the panel will be sitting 'inside' or 'over').

But, it's a simple, 'dry', strong product to use - and you can emulsion straight on.

Plasterboard + skim - easy to cut to fit and any small gaps will be disguised by the skim. Joints will similarly be skimmed over (after taping). But requires skimming skills.

Relatively simplish DIY job too, tho'.

    Your call :)
