Does anyone have any unusual ideas for some sort of old fashioned bolt on an unglazed composite uPVC door? My elderly neighbour is getting a new back door but wants the peace of mind of bolting the door from the inside overnight. The double-glazing salesmen try to assure her that the new Euro cylinders are so good that she doesn't need .... ya de ya de ya. She wants a bolt or something else that she can see and touch. She'll have a chain but that's not enough for her .... she knows that a small bolt cutter can be poked through the partly open door. We all know that anything screwed to the plastic will: a/ fall off b/ invalidate the warranty.
You may find the answer you require by speaking to a uPVC repair specialist rather than a salesperson.
If she wants a bolt, then just fit one. It will be more a peace of mind than actual security item, but if it keeps to old girl happy, all's well and good.
Has the door got multi point locking when you pull up the handle ? If yes, then patiently explain, discuss, and demonstrate how these work and actually replace the slide bolt with several locks along the edge of the door - so actually more secure than a single bolt It may just simply be that your neighbour doesn't realise this and is therefore worried about the seemingly single point lock via the handle So a nice gentle chat over a cup of tea and a slice of cake may well sort out neighbours concerns - good luck
Thanks for the replies - all helpful in their own way. It's the tea and cake that rewards me for my help!
