We have recently bought a bagless vacuum cleaner (Powerbase Xtreme 1800W). Problem is that after minimal usage (perhaps just a few minutes) the filter is surrounded by a thickish layer of dust which makes it suck less well. Though it is obvious that vacuum cleaners need emptying regularly, previously I would do this every few months, without any significant degradation in performance. On this model however I really need to do it after each usage which is a bit of a pain, though it is very easy to do. Is this a problem because it is bagless, and if so does it apply to all such machines? Any ideas?

It sounds like a cheap and nasty vacuum. You should have bought a Dyson or a Henry.

The best vacuum cleaner you can buy is a SEBO which is made in Germany, John Lewis sell them at about £250.
It is not bagless, but knocks spots off all the rest, and believe me we have tried most of them.

You can't beat a good goblin before you go buying vacuum cleaners.

You obviously haven't tried the Kirby, which is made in the States, (and costs six times what the SEBO costs)

The best by far is Miel. I have an Industrial Aqua Vac which is 3000 Watts and Miel knock spots of that for suction

    Hi Mulberrry D.

Ooh, some sensible answers in there.

Ok, as the one who vacuums the house :(, I'll give my tu'penth worth.

Had a Dyson DC01. Worked ok, but didn't like the cost.

So, when it came to a replacement I very cleverly (do I it any other way...?) did my research and found the best sucker in the bag-less range was the new Bosch. Also had a good reliability rating. Also looked really nice (that matters to me...). Also, it was half the price of the Dyson DC07 (that matters to me even more :)).

    So I bought it.

Complete rubbish. Like yours, it lost suction after a few minutes use. The filters - which they claim only need cleaning every few months - needed cleaning every use. And it was bludy messy job, needing to be done outside if you weren't going to choke yourself on dust.

Fortunately, it blew up before the year's guarantee was out. Better still, they didn't do it any more (guess why?!), so I got my money back.

Bought a DC07, and it is absolutely fantastic. Simple as that.

So, return your cleaner. Make clear it isn't fit for purpose. Does it say 'doesn't lose suction' or anything like that on it? If so, tell them they are wrong.

    Whatever - return it.

    Buy a Dyson.

I never knew talking about vacuum cleaners could be so much fun.

Nearly as much fun as it is to read about them.

    Enjoy.

You haven't tried the Dyson V6. And the V8 has been launched also. For round the house it makes all other vacuums redundant. Beam included imo.
The days of trailing leads and hoses is over.

Do these Dysons have the ability to travel back in time as well?

    Blimmin eck.

Everyone goes on about henries. Big motors and cheap. That's all they have going for them.
